1.4.3 Discussion of bridge design after testing
1. What is your score on efficiency? If the efficiency is high/low, what went right/wrong?
This is unusually low for the design of the bridge. The only failure that occurred came from one stick with not enough glue, which was located at the side of the bridge. Excluding that stick, we believe the bridge could have carried much more weight effortlessly.
2. Which part of the bridge started to give way first? Explain using Physics concepts.
One anchor of the bridge gave way first. This was one of the four primary points of the bridge carrying its weight. There were also four secondary pillars supporting the weight. It broke due to the tension acting on it as the centre of the bridge was being pulled down and together, pulling the pillars off the anchors.
3. Which part of the bridge provided the most strength in the testing process? Explain using Physics concepts.
The main trusses holding the weights themselves. They were able to hold the maximum weight without any visible stress; tension or compression. It remained completely rigid and was still usable after concluding the test.
